Meet the Margaret River Hospital team

John Carles

Veterinarian & Practice Owner (BVMS BSc)

Dr John Carles is the owner of out practice with his partner Beatrice. He graduated from Murdoch University in 1988 and did some overseas work before moving to Yorke Peninsula in South Australia, where he has run a busy practice for the past 25 years.

Returning to WA and Margaret River has been a very exciting time and he brings a wealth of experience and ideas to the hospital. An experienced surgeon and small animal vet, Dr John likes nothing better than mending broken bones or doing a knee reconstruction. His focus in the practice is to give the best service possible to our clients with good staffing and equipment levels.

In his down time Dr John enjoys all things ocean and bush, surfing, kiting and bush walking

Amy Forsythe

Veterinarian

Dr Amy has been working in our beautiful south west most of her veterinary career. She graduated from Murdoch University in 2013 and is one of our senior vets.

Dr Amy has completed a graduated certificate in Emergency and Critical Care and enjoys treating the wide variety of medical, surgical and emergency cases that rural practice offers. Treating snake bitten patients and performing abdominal surgery are amongst her favourite cases.

Dr Amy has no spare time between work, two very young children and her demanding menagerie of animals - but she dreams of getting back out bush to nerd-it-out identifying orchids, camp amongst the stars, surf with the groms and walk her naughty escapee pug dog ‘Stanley’ at the beach. Pictured is Amy and her wife’s orphaned Joey “Sponge”

James Dawson

Veterinarian

Dr James moved to Margaret River and started working for the Margaret River vet hospital 2 years ago. He enjoys working on the interesting cases that are only seen in the South West region and on the emergencies that come through the doors every day.

In his free time he enjoys walking his dog Andy on the beach and meeting and interacting with the same pets that we treat at our clinic. He also likes mountain biking, synthesisers and DJing.

Dr James says "I couldn't see myself working anywhere else after working with such a dedicated, compassionate core team of vets and nurses."

Francesca May

Veterinarian

Dr Francesca joined us after moving from the East coast of Australia where she graduated from the University of Sydney in 2019 and spent her first years in practice.

Francesca is enjoying the new scenery that Margaret River has to offer. When not at work, she can be found spending time with her Jack Russell x (Fergus), surfing, free diving or participating in a range of team sports.

Fran says she loves being a part of such a collaborative and caring team, and being able to provide best care for her patients and clients.

Michel Doney

Veterinarian

Dr Michel

Leigh

Practice Manager

Leigh is our practice manager and has been working within the veterinary industry for longer than most of us.

Leigh completed her vet nursing training in 2002 and has seen the veterinary industry change and grow to support our pets and wildlife. For the last 15 years she has been managing small animal veterinary practices and is well known within the industry.

Leigh’s old Labrador Marley can’t do as many tricks as he used to but was one of the best trained dogs around - notebly for balancing a glass of wine on his head.

Leigh is a total wine and food critique and has wine and spirit certifications perfect for our region. She has a menagerie of creatures and is often chasing after her young children, chickens or the kangaroo.

Hayley Cambell

Registered Veterinary Nurse

Hayley is our longest standing vet nurse. Hayley started with us as a work place student and worked her way up the ranks completing her certificate of vet nursing.

Hayley spent many of her young formative years on local dairy farms watching her parents work with cattle. She would often help out nurse the poorly cows and bottle feed the calves.

Hayleys favourite area within the veterinary industry is surgical nursing and the rewarding recoveries we witness of some of our most challenging cases.

In her spare time Hayley enjoys going on adventures, socialising with her friends and going out for lunch.

Ashleigh Summer

Registered Veterinary Nurse

Ashleigh has been a Vet Nurse since late 2018 and joined the Margaret River team in June 2021.

Ash has loved animals for as long as she can remember. She grew up with family pets, studied a Bachelor of Science in Zoology and Conservation Biology, and volunteered with wildlife for years before she set her sights on nursing.

A self proclaimed cat lady, Ash lives with her two fluffy cats Ziggy and Narla, and her partner Joe in town. She loves living in Margs; bush walking, going to the beach and drinking all the tasty wine.

Ashleigh wants to always bring a positive energy to the clinic to make the day better for her team, your pets and you - no matter the reason you are in!

Mel Giles

Registered Veterinary Nurse

Mel grew up in South Africa and from an early age she knew she wanted to work with animals. After completing her schooling in Australia, she began studying Vet Nursing as soon as she could.

Mel has been nursing for 13 years and still loves every aspect of what she does.

Over the years Mel has completed further studies in areas of Anaesthesia, business, management, training and assessment. Mels Passion is for teaching and training future Vet nurses, where she finds great joy in seeing new nurses succeed and thrive in their careers.
